A CRAZY RIDE

B-movies have a reputation for being - well - crap.  So why do they achieve such rabid cult followings?

“Because you can slip in all sorts of subversive ideas without anyone noticing, unless they’re paying attention,” explains Banks.  “It is a completely unpretentious genre that can operate on a number of different levels, and absolutely anything goes in terms of what you can do story-wise.  There are no audience expectations, other than to be taken for a crazy ride.”

How is it possible to be unpretentious when the main character in your story is incredibly pretentious?

“It’s a chicken and egg syndrome,” Banks says.  “Is Jess a kitschy writer, or just trying to write something kitschy?  And more importantly, why does she have soot on her face on the DVD sleeve?  You think she could have had a wash before the photographer arrived, for god’s sake.”

He pauses briefly.  “You won’t print that bit, will you?”
