LAWRENCE

Lawrence’s depth is well concealed.  His flamboyant personality and desire to shock and entertain is paramount at all times.

His relationship with William partially satisfies this desire.  it also allows him to cling on to his youth, and be the centre of attention.

Being a successful writer has made a celebrity out of Lawrence, but he reveals nothing of himself in his writings.  They are abstract and pretentious, written in language so vague that the reader can project whatever feelings they want onto them.

His books are all things to all people, which perhaps explains their success.  Lawrence avoids deep analysis - he can usually gloss over it with a witty remark before swiftly changing the subject of conversation.

In emergencies, he can get away entirely - but not tonight.  Being locked in Jess’s house is difficult for Lawrence because it is as close as he has ever got to confronting any personal issues whatsoever in his life.

He avoids discussion of these by either shutting down totally, becoming irritated, or using any opportunity that becomes available to deflect the focus away from himself.

His relationship with William is one of many that he has with younger men.  He can be worshipped in every sense by them, and he finds that a turn on.

He does not treat them callously or blatantly as a sex object, but rather as a small pet that can be nurtured until adulthood, after which it becomes boring and necessary to buy a new one.
